Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 25, 2021
Share
This is a great time of year to hike, camp, and fish for several days on the small native brook trout streams in the mountains. The water temperature is ideal and the stream temperature is great for the hatches, prompting the trout to feed.
The Epeorus pleuralis mayfly hatches are heavy and the Blue Quill hatches are coming on strong, thus you will have many rising trout. I match these with the Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14 and the Blue Quill Dry size 16. Fish these on a 5X leader.
When I approach a pool, I pause to locate the feeding trout, then go one on one with them in order starting with the closest one first. By using my pop strike or just releasing each trout gently, you can usually catch several nice trout in each pool.
