Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 23, 2025
Share
Both the North Fork and the South Fork of the Shenandoah River are in great shape. Water levels are holding up and we have had reports from our guides and customers that they are picking up some nice bass. Hot flies for this week: Murray's Magnum Hog Sucker size 4, Murray's Tungsten Cone Head Marauder size 4, Magnum Darter size 4, Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite size 4, Murray's Olive Strymph size 4. and Chartreuse Marauder size 6. Fish these slowly along the stream bottom, stripping about every 4 seconds. We are using 9ft 7-weight fly rods with a Bass Bug Taper 7-weight fly line and Bright Butt Leader 9ft 2X to throw these large flies.
Chest high waders are recommended for wading as the water temperature is still too cold to wade wet. If you need help on access to either the North or South Fork, stop by the fly shop or see my book Fly Fishing the Shenandoah River for Smallmouth Bass.
