Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report- December 12, 2017

Last week I discussed fishing the deep river pools for large bass. I must admit I enjoy this fishing because the river is crystal clear, usually I have the river to myself and the fishing can be very productive. Two of my most productive flies are the Murray's Black Madtom Sculpin Streamer size 4 and Murray's Olive Madtom Sculpin Streamer size 4. In order to swim these flies deeply along the streambottom, I use a fast sinking head fly line which sinks from four to eight inches per second. The Scientific Anglers Sonar Sink 30 Warm Tip Fly Line in 200 grain is outstanding. With this I use Murray's Fluorocarbon 6 foot 2X Sinking Line Leader.
The South Fork of the Shenandoah River from Luray down to Bentonville has much of this type water which is from five to seven feet deep. The North Fork of the Shenandoah River from Edinburg to Toms Brook has much of this type water.
