Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 16, 2025

We are seeing many hatches on the native brook trout streams--Blue Quills, Little Yellow Stoneflies, Caddisflies and March Browns. We have covered some techniques for the Blue Quills and March Browns on previous reports so today I am going to focus on the Little Yellow Stoneflies. These will be hatching for about two months and I like to cover this hatch by using both dry flies and nymphs on a 6ft 6X Mountain Leader. First I attach a Murray's Little Yellow Stonefly nymph size 16 to a 16-inch piece of 6X mono and attach to the bend of the hook of the Little Yellow Stonefly Dry size 16 with an improved clinch knot. A Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis size 14 or 16 works best for the caddis hatch. Despite the cooler temperatures we are doing well in our personal fishing and I am getting reports from many customers with pictures of their success as well.  This is prime time for the native brook trout streams with several hatches and the water levels are holding up with the recent rains. So take advantage of them while you can. You can either come into the streams from the Skyline Drive or from the lower boundaries of the SNP.
