Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 23, 2025

The native brook trout streams are doing well. The water levels are holding up and the hatches are plentiful, providing many natural foods for the trout to feed upon.  We are seeing Blue Quills, March Browns, Caddisflies and Little Yellow Stoneflies. Most anglers are using dry flies but be sure to have a few nymphs in your box in case you decide to fish a dry with a dropper. I am using a Murray's Mountain Leader 6ft 6X. Stay low and sneak as the trout are wary. Try not to fish behind someone--what they didn't catch, they have already spooked. Don't forget the dry fly floatant!

Recommended dry flies: Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 16, Blue Quill Dry size 16, March Brown Dry size 14, Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis, Tan size 16, and Little Yellow Stonefly Dry size 16.

Recommended Nymphs: Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Olive, size 16, Murray's Little Yellow Stonefly Nymph size 16, and Bead Head Prince size 14.

All of the streams in the Shenandoah National Park are open to fishing. If you need help on access, stop by the fly shop or see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

Fly Fishing Schools for Native Brook Trout

We only have a few openings left in our Mountain Trout Schools conducted in the George Washington National Forest. These schools provide a full day of learning with a classroom presentation and on the stream instruction. Start at 9am at our fly shop in Edinburg, VA.  Openings on April 28 and May 5
