Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - December 11, 2024

The rains todays are helping the stream levels on the stocked trout streams. Not only are the levels improving but there is a slight stain color in some areas because of the heavy rains providing us to be able to sneak into the stream without spooking the trout. The overcast day is another plus for us.  Most anglers do not like to fish in the rain but sometimes those days provide the best fishing.

There are many natural minnows found below the heavy riffles and this provides some excellent trout fishing by using streamers such as Murray's Marauder (olive or black) size 8. The Rubber Leg Nymph size 8, Copper John Jig size 12, San Juan Worm size 8, and Jigged Squirmy Wormie size 12 are some that our customers are having success with this week.

Mill Creek in Mount Jackson and Tomahawk Pond in Shenandoah County, the lower portions of the Hughes and Rose River in Madison County, and the Hidden Valley of the Jackson were all just recently stocked. The see the latest schedule, visit the VA DWR website.

The native brook trout streams are too cold for good fishing at this time of year.  The Skyline Drive has closed several times because of icy, snowy conditions. The latest message:

Due to expected adverse weather, all of Skyline Drive will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

Weather and road conditions can change rapidly in the winter. Visitors should expect slick driving conditions. Although the speed limit is 35 mph, conditions often require lower speeds.
