Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - December 18, 2024
Share
Often you'll see many little black stoneflies in our trout streams and the trout feed well on them. Watch the slow water along the banks, tails of the pools and the downfalls where the flies collect. The riseforms of the trout feeding on these little black stoneflies are very delicate so be observant. I have good success on Murray's Little Black Stonefly Dry size 16 fished on 7X. I am always amazed to see these even on cold snowy days.
All of the local stocked trout streams are clear and fishable. Passage Creek in Fort Valley was stocked last week, Hawksbill in Luray was stocked this week and Mill Creek in Mount Jackson was stocked a little over a week ago.
The native brook trout streams are cold and not much is occurring but I have had success using the little black stoneflies on these streams, even in the middle of the winter. It is hit or miss on these streams at this time of year. As I am posting this report, all of the Skyline Drive is open but the conditions can change very quickly in the Shenandoah National Park, so be sure to check the website for updates/closures.
