Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - February 26, 2025

The local stocked trout streams are holding up nicely and many anglers are taking advantage of the nice weather this week by getting on the water for a few hours. Heavy nymphs such as Olsen's Blowtorch Barbless size 16,  Jigged Tungsten Bead Hares Ear Nymph size 14 and Perdigon Nymph size 12 or 14 (French) are working well.  We have been experimenting with some of the new flies that just came in--Holo Point Jig (Barbless) and Copper John Jig (Barbless). Check them out and see what you think.  Worm patterns are recommended as well on the stocked streams. A San Juan Worm or Squirmy Wormie work well.

Mill Creek in Mount Jackson was just recently stocked. To see the latest streams stocked, visit the DWR website.

Now lets move onto the native brook trout streams.  If you are like me, you want to be on a small native brook trout stream in the mountains. I have been riding around each Monday checking different areas and I am finding most of the streams are carrying extra water. We are still a little early in the season but if you go to the upper reaches of the streams to hopefully get around the extra water you might have some success. I recommend nymphs such as Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14 and Mr. Rapidan Emerger size 14.

Prime Time to fish these streams is April and May, which is why we schedule our fly fishing schools during this time.
