Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - January 9, 2025

In the larger stocked trout streams such as the Jackson River and Bull Pasture, I like to use the following technique in the deep pools. Attach a Oros medium indicator six feet up of a Murray's Classic 9ft 3X leader. Then tie on a Murray's Heavy Black Hellgrammite size 8. Make 30 foot casts at a 45 degree angle up and across stream so your nymph drifts through the anticipated feeding station and watch the indicator for the strike. The critical part of this technique is where you position yourself to make the presentation. You often catch the large trout straight out beside you.

Our local stocked trout streams such as Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg, Passage Creek in Fort Valley, Hawksbill in Luray and Mill Creek in Mount Jackson are all clear and fishable.  Still snow and ice on the banks so I would recommend a wading stick not only for wading but also for getting to the streams. Our anglers are doing well with nymphs like Copper John, (zebra or green) size 16, Bead Head Prince size 14, Perdigon size 14 or 16, and if you need some extra weight use Olsen's Blowtorch or Barbless French Bomb.  Fish all of these on a Murray's Classic Leader 9ft 5X or Murray's Trout Nymph 9ft 5X Leader.

The native brook trout streams are much too cold to get any kind of action. The Skyline Drive remains closed due to snow/icy conditions. Sign up for Shenandoah Alerts by texting SHENALERTS to 888777. Any time there are closures, re-openings, or other important safety-related alerts, subscribers will receive a notification via text. You may unsubscribe at any time.   This snow will definitely help the native brook trout streams for this Spring (prime time).
