Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 12, 2025

Native Brook Trout Streams - The Quill Gordon emergers are now swimming from the stream bottom to the surface of the stream to drift along the stream surface as an adult dun. At this stage the Mr. Rapidan Emerger size 14 is very effective. At this same time the adult Quill Gordons are drifting along the surface of the stream preparing to fly to the streamside foliage. The Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14 will catch the trout that are feeding on the adults drifting on the surface. I am still catching more on nymphs than drys so be prepared to have several styles of nymphs in your fly box. The water levels were perfect in the Shenandoah National Park earlier in the week.  If you are finding streams that have heavier water volume, use heavier weighted nymphs such as the Olsen's Blowtorch size 16 or Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14. See my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park for stream access and hatch charts.  Be sure to check the SNP page for alerts on road/trail closures and more info on controlled burns they will be conducting over the next month.

I've had several anglers asking about Little Stoney west of Edinburg.  The upper access (FS 92) is still closed but you can access from the bottom via Millertown Road. Walk up and around the reservoir to fish the lower portion of Little Stoney.

We still have openings in our On The Stream Mountain Trout Schools conducted in the George Washington National Forest. These schools meet at our fly shop in Edinburg on designated dates at 9am for a classroom presentation then proceed to a small native brook trout stream for hands on instruction until 5pm.  Fly Rod and Reel Outfits are provided for the day.

Now let's move onto the Stocked Trout Streams. Our local stocked trout streams are at perfect water levels. Anglers are using nymphs and streamers to tempt the rainbows and browns.  Some areas have been stocked with brook trout or tiger trout. Check the DWR website for more info on the streams recently stocked. Bead Head Hare's Ear Nymph size 12, Bead Head Prince size 12 and Murray's Marauder size 10 are working well this week.  A few anglers are using the Squirmy Wormies size 10 with success.   If you need help on access to the local stocked trout streams, stop by the fly shop.
