Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 19, 2025

We are catching the native brook trout on Quill Gordon and Blue Quill mayfly patterns. Most of the action is still coming from nymphs but I like to fish a dry with a dropper. I fish all of the flies listed below on Murray's Mountain 6ft 5X leader with a slack line cast on all of my presentations. I encourage you to mash the barb down on all flies while fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

The Skyline Drive is currently open and all of the streams in the Shenandoah National Park are worthwhile to fish. See my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park for stream access and more information on fishing these streams.

Fly Fishing Schools for Native Brook Trout

Our first fly fishing school for 2025 is only two weeks away.  We have a few openings in our Mountain Trout Schools for Spring 2025.  These are taught at two different locations on scheduled dates. Each day starts with a classroom presentation and then proceeds on the stream for hands on instruction for a full day of learning.  Fly Rod & Reel outfits are provided for the day.

We have a few openings in our Mountain Trout Schools in the Shenandoah National Park on April 2 and 9.

We have a few openings in our Mountain Trout Schools in the George Washington National Forest on April 7, 22, or 28

Now let's move onto the stocked trout streams. The DWR continues to stock streams with rainbows and browns for the next couple of weeks throughout Virginia.  Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg and Mill Creek in Mount Jackson was just stocked last week. Several areas west of Edinburg received some heavy rains and hail on Sunday but all of the streams have returned to normal levels as of this morning. I would recommend using heavy weighted nymph such as Olsen's Blowtorch or Copper Johns and even a Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite in a size 8. Worm patterns like the Jigged Squirmy Wormie and San Juan Worm are working as well.
