Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 26, 2025

Native Brook Trout Streams--Both the Quill Gordon and Blue Quill mayflies emerge from the stream in mid-day and continue until dusk. The spinners of both of these mayflies return to the stream to make and deposit their eggs into the stream about two hours before dark and continue until dark. With both the duns and spinners on the water at dusk, many trout will be rising and the dry fly fishing will take off. A Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14 and Blue Quill Dry size 16 are my preferred flies to cover these hatches. For nymphs a Mr. Rapidan Bead Head size 14, Mr. Rapidan Emerger size 14 and Bead Head Prince size 14 are great for this time of year.  I am using a Murray's Mountain 6ft 5X leader.

All of the streams in the Shenandoah National Park are open for fishing and as of right now the stream levels are holding up. If you need help on stream access, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

Some anglers prefer to fish the native brook trout streams in the George Washington National Forest. If you have drove into one of these streams and encountered a closed gate in the last few months, then please note that the Forest Service will start re-opening these gates throughout next week.

Fly Fishing Schools for Native Brook Trout

Our first fly fishing school for 2025 is only one week away.  We have a few openings in our Mountain Trout Schools for Spring 2025.  These are taught at two different locations on scheduled dates. Each day starts with a classroom presentation and then proceeds on the stream for hands on instruction for a full day of learning.  Fly Rod & Reel outfits are provided for the day.

We have a few openings in our Mountain Trout Schools in the Shenandoah National Park on April 2 and 9.

We have a few openings in our Mountain Trout Schools in the George Washington National Forest on April 7, 22, or 28

Stocked Trout Streams The local stocked trout streams are clear and fishable. Passage Creek was stocked last week. Big Stoney and Mill Creek were stocked two weeks ago. Hawksbill in Luray was just stocked yesterday. The stocking program will be ending in the next month so take advantage of it while you can.  I'm not saying you cannot fish these streams during the summer but keep in mind they are not stocked in the summertime.  Often these streams get too low and warm during the summer. They nymphs that I listed above for the native brook trout streams are working well on the stocked trout streams as well. If you want streamers, a Murray's Marauder in black or olive in a size 10 or 12 will be the ticket.
