Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 6, 2025

The stocked trout streams are at great water levels from the rains we received yesterday.  Passage Creek was slightly stained last evening but should be clearing today. Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg is clear and fishable. The DWR continues to stock streams throughout the state this month so check their website for updates. Nymphs and streamers are working well.  Olsen's Blowtorch Barbless size 16, Copper Johns size 14, Jigged Squirmy Wormies and Murray's Tungsten Bead Marauder size 10 are the flies recommended for this week.  If you need help on access stop by the fly shop.

Now let's move onto the native brook trout streams. Many of the Quill Gordon Nymphs are reaching full size and are making their mini-migration to the lower sections of the riffles. Here they pop their wings and head to the surface to become the dun. Fishing the Mr. Rapidan Emerger size 14 upstream against the riffles with a gentle lifting action on a 5X leader will catch many trout.  I am starting to put together some fly assortments that will get you through the major hatches.  I have covered the first two major hatches with our Quill Gordon Mayfly Hatch Fly Special and Blue Quill Mayfly Hatch Fly Special. Each special comes with a 6ft 5X leader.

All of the Shenandoah National Park streams are fishable. The Skyline Drive has been closed because of high wind conditions so check their website or Facebook page for updates. You can always access most streams from the bottom sections.  See my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park for information on access to the streams and more about hatch charts.

If you want to learn more about fly fishing on the small native brook trout streams, then register for a On The Stream Mountain Trout School.  We offer schools that start at our fly shop in Edinburg at 9am for a classroom presentation and then head to a native brook trout in the George Washington National Forest for hands on instruction until about 5pm.  This offers a full day of learning. (Fly rod and reel outfits are provided for the school.) The schools are filling up so register your spot today!.
