Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - November 5, 2024
Share
Many streams throughout Virginia are being stocked with nice browns and rainbows. A few delayed harvest streams are being stocked with brookies. The rainbow trout tend to go downstream after being stocked. Most like to feed below the natural springs in the creeks on natural cress bugs. From these springs to the next 100-150 downstream I fish a Cress Bug size 14 and am able to land many trout. Many anglers like to use worm patterns like the San Juan Worm or Squirmy Wormie on the stocked trout streams. Good nymphs for this week include Rubber Leg Nymph (Brown) size 8 and Murray's Dark Stonefly Nymph size 12. Visit the VA DWR website for the latest list of streams stocked.
Murray's Fly Shop will be closed November 10-12 for Veterans Day. We will reopen on Wednesday November 13 at 9a.m. and resume shipping any online orders placed over the weekend.
The brook trout are still spawning in the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park, so I don't personally fish these streams during this time. Prime time to fish these streams are typically April and May when the water levels and hatches are ideal. That is the reasoning for holding our Mountain Trout Schools in the Spring. We already have the dates set for Spring 2025. If you want to learn more about these streams there are a few things you can do:
- Read my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park
- Register for my classroom discussion on fishing the Park streams held at Murray's Fly Shop on December 14 at 10a.m.
- Register for an On The Stream Mountain Trout School in the Shenandoah National Park meeting at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, VA (Spring 2025)
- Register for an On The Stream Mountain Trout School in the George Washington National Forest meeting at Murray's Fly Shop (Spring 2025)
