Scott Session 9' 8-Weight Fly Rod & Reel Outfit | Bass, Salmon, Steelhead & Saltwater
The Scott Session 908/4 is a versatile 8-weight fly rod for anglers who need the power to cast larger flies while still wanting the smooth, responsive feel of a Scott rod. I particularly like this rod when fishing smallmouth and largemouth bass, pike, salmon, steelhead, and light saltwater, where larger flies, wind, and heavier lines are often part of the fishing.
The 9' 8-weight has the power to turn over large streamers, poppers, and sink-tip lines while maintaining good accuracy and line control. It is also a comfortable choice when you need to cast larger flies repeatedly throughout the day. For bass fishing, I would use it with flies up to about size 1/0, while the additional power makes it useful for larger freshwater fish and a variety of coastal species.
Why This Outfit Excels
- Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass: Plenty of power for large streamers, articulated flies, poppers, and other bass flies, especially when fishing around heavy cover.
- Pike and Carp: The fast action and strong butt section provide the power needed for larger freshwater fish and larger flies.
- Salmon and Steelhead: The 8-weight provides the strength and line control needed when fishing larger rivers, heavier flies, and strong-running fish.
- Light Saltwater: A versatile choice for bonefish, snook, puppy drum, Spanish mackerel, and smaller striped bass, particularly when wind and larger flies are involved.
- Coastal Fishing: The 9' length and 8-weight power make this a useful rod for the Outer Banks and other coastal waters where longer casts and larger flies are common.
- Fast Action with Feel: The Session provides the recovery and power needed for larger flies without feeling unnecessarily stiff or heavy in the hand.
Recommended Fly Line
Scott recommends 210–230 grains for the Session 908/4. Our outfit includes a Scientific Anglers Sonar Titan WF-8-I intermediate fly line, which has a short, powerful head that loads the rod quickly and is particularly useful for streamers, bass flies, and other subsurface fishing.

Orvis Reel Color: Choose Black, Olive, or Copper. If no color is selected, Black will be sent.

Fly Line Options
The included Scientific Anglers Sonar Titan WF-8-I is an excellent choice when you want an intermediate line for streamers, bass flies, and other subsurface fishing. Its short, powerful head helps load the 8-weight quickly and makes casting larger flies easier.
If your primary use is different, we can also set up this outfit with a fly line better suited to your fishing. For bass fishing, we can recommend a floating bass line or sink-tip depending on the flies and water you fish. For saltwater fishing, we can set up the outfit with a line designed for tropical conditions and species such as bonefish and snook. If you are using the rod for salmon or steelhead, we can recommend a line and sink-tip combination based on the river and fishing technique.
